Who Owns ZYN? Swedish Match, Philip Morris and Where ZYN Is Made

Short answer: ZYN is owned by Philip Morris International (PMI). The brand was created by the Swedish snus company Swedish Match, which PMI took over in November 2022 in a deal worth about $16 billion. In the US, ZYN is made by Swedish Match USA — a PMI affiliate — at plants in Owensboro, Kentucky and Aurora, Colorado.

Who created ZYN?

ZYN is a Swedish Match brand; no source we have found shows it was bought as an existing brand. According to Swedish Match USA’s own presentation to the FDA’s advisory committee, ZYN was test-launched in 50 stores in Colorado in 2014, expanded to 11 western states in 2016 — more than 4,000 stores by November that year — and launched nationally in the US in 2019.

Swedish Match and PMI have not publicly named an inventor. Inc. magazine, however, describes the Swedish chemist Thomas Ericsson as “the inventor of Zyn”, saying he developed a white snus formula in his garage and that Swedish Match approached him in 2009 about bringing his white nicotine pouch to market. We have not seen that confirmed by Swedish Match or PMI. Ericsson now advises challenger brands — see private capital outside Big Tobacco. It is also worth correcting a common claim: ZYN was not the first nicotine pouch, even though Swedish Match’s 2016 press release called it that. The format had existed in Sweden since the late 2000s as a medicinal product — see when nicotine pouches were invented.

How Philip Morris came to own ZYN

PMI announced its offer for Swedish Match on May 11, 2022 at SEK 106 per share. On October 20, 2022 it raised the offer to SEK 116 per share — stated as final — valuing the company at roughly SEK 176 billion, widely reported as about $16 billion. On November 7, 2022 the offer became unconditional with PMI owning 82.59% of the shares; by November 28 it had passed 93% and started a compulsory buyout of the rest. Swedish Match’s last trading day on Nasdaq Stockholm was December 30, 2022.

Who makes ZYN today?

In the FDA’s marketing authorizations, the applicant and manufacturer of record for ZYN is Swedish Match USA, Inc., a PMI affiliate. Since January 1, 2026, PMI has been organized into two business units, PMI International and PMI U.S., with the US reported as a separate segment and Stacey Kennedy as CEO of PMI U.S.

How big is ZYN?

PMI shipped 794 million cans of ZYN in 2025 and says ZYN held about two-thirds of US nicotine pouch category value that year; the brand is sold in 55 markets. In the second quarter of 2026, PMI switched to reporting individual pouches: 2.9 billion pouches shipped in the US, up about 2% on the year. On the regulatory side, ZYN received the FDA’s first-ever marketing authorization for nicotine pouches (20 products, January 16, 2025), modified risk orders for the same 20 products on June 30, 2026, and authorization for 11 ZYN Ultra products at 9 and 11 mg on August 21, 2026.

Can you invest in ZYN?

Not directly. ZYN has no ticker of its own; the way to own it is through Philip Morris International, listed on the New York Stock Exchange as PM.

Our read ZYN’s value rests less on the recipe than on two assets that are hard to copy: FDA authorization and manufacturing capacity. The 2024–2025 shortage showed what happens when demand outruns capacity, and the PMTA process shows how narrow the regulatory gate is. PMI didn’t pay $16 billion for a flavor — it paid for a position few competitors can reach quickly.

On the numbers: Ownership, deal and plant figures come from PMI and Swedish Match releases, the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the FDA. Market share figures are PMI’s own; PMI changed from cans to pouches as its reporting unit in 2026, so years are not directly comparable. We have not verified which European plant produces ZYN.
